What Mercy Is About
A German couple, Niels and Maria, move with their teenage son Markus to Hammerfest on the Norwegian coast, hoping for a fresh start. What happens is the opposite, and the three of them drift further apart. Niels buries himself in his engineering work and an affair with a colleague, Maria takes extra shifts, Markus cannot cope at school. One night, after a double shift, Maria's car hits something on the road, or someone. Matthias Glasner's film is about how the family finds its way back to each other after that. The darkness of the polar night is both setting and mood.
