What Merku Thodarchi Malai Is About
Rangasamy lives on the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu and works, like the men around him, on spice plantations owned by landlords; he is content enough, but what he wants is a piece of land of his own and a living made by farming it. After years of grinding work he buys it with the help of a local politician named Chaako, and then the harder part begins, which is dealing with the arrangement corrupt and wealthy politicians have built. Lenin Bharathi’s hundred and twenty two minute Tamil film is about the lives of landless labourers at the foot of the Western Ghats and about the crack that commercialisation opens in them. Vijay Sethupathi produced, Ilaiyaraaja wrote the music and Theni Eswar photographed it.
