What Message to Love - The Isle of Wight Festival Is About
In August 1970 six hundred thousand people poured onto the Isle of Wight. It was the third and last festival held on the island. The documentary records what went on behind the stage as much as the music on it. Money, greed and disorder are plainly inside the account; the film’s case is that this was the beginning of a condition that would trouble the music business for years. Jimi Hendrix gave his last concert in England at this festival and died two weeks later. The account does not present those days as a golden age. The tension between the crowd and the organisers goes on the record too. Murray Lerner’s hundred and twenty seven minute documentary, a joint British and American production, was completed in 1996.
