What Minyan Is About
In the rapidly changing New York of the eighties, a Russian Jewish teenager is caught between his identity, his faith and his sexuality, and believes there is no way to hold the three together. At the senior housing complex where his grandfather lives, he meets two men who live together and have told nobody. Knowing them shows him another possibility for his own life. The film does not set community life, religion and desire against each other; it puts them all in the same room. The account also keeps the boy’s relationship with his grandfather at the centre; the silence between the two generations is the real weight the film carries. Samuel H. Levine and Ron Rifkin appear in Eric Steel’s hundred and nineteen minute American film, completed in 2020.
