What Miracles of Thursday Is About
Fontecilla is a Spanish town nobody visits any more and which is quietly going under. The mayor and the town's leading citizens come up with a plan to bring the money back: every Thursday night they will stage an apparition of Saint Dimas. The crowds duly arrive, and then a stranger nobody recognises turns up in town. Berlanga's 1957 comedy went through the censors twice over. The first version of the script was banned for showing a false miracle; Father Garau of the censorship board rewrote the second half and the ending, scenes were cut and the opening was reshot. Berlanga tried to have Garau listed in the credits as a co-writer and was refused.
