What National Heritage Is About
After Franco's death the Leguineche family comes out of the country estate where they have kept to themselves for decades and returns to Madrid. The old marquis has one aim: to get his standing back, to move closer to the circle around the monarch, to be received again by the illustrious surnames. He wants to move into the old palace he owns in the city, but his wife is living in it and she cannot stand him. Luis García Berlanga's film is the second part of the trilogy about the Leguineche family. Berlanga neither exalts the aristocracy nor simply makes fun of it; instead he shows Spain in transition, with the remains of the old order trying to find a place in the new one. The crowded scenes are built in single takes with everyone talking over everyone.
