What Miss Blue Jeans Is About
Matti Kinnunen’s 2012 Finnish film is set in 1977 in Oulu, in the north of the country. Punk and new wave have reached even here; young people who look increasingly strange start appearing on the street, and the rebellion lands directly on seventeen-year-old Välde. He wants to play in a band, become famous, get drunk for the first time and win Pike, the most beautiful girl in his class. When Pike wins the Miss Blue Jeans contest run by the country’s only pop magazine and takes up with the bourgeois Henri, Välde stakes everything on one plan and sets about constructing an entirely new persona. The source is a novel by the musician Kauko Röyhkä.
