What Miss Lulu Bett Is About
Lulu Bett lives in the house of her sister Ina and her brother in law Dwight Deacon, does all the work of the household and is never asked her opinion. Her brother in law is both a dentist and a justice of the peace, and because of words said as a joke over dinner he unknowingly marries Lulu to his visiting brother Ninian. The accident gets Lulu out of the house, but there is an unresolved marriage in Ninian’s past. The town schoolteacher Neil Cornish is also interested in her. Adapted from Zona Gale’s novel of the same name and from the play that won her a Pulitzer, the silent film is about the invisible labour of a woman at home and about her way out of it. Lois Wilson appears in William C. deMille’s seventy one minute American production, completed in 1921.
