What Miss Sharon Jones! Is About
Barbara Kopple’s documentary follows the soul singer Sharon Jones through the year in which, while preparing to release a new album, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The camera stays with her across it: treatment by day, the stage by night. She is also trying to keep the Dap-Kings together and the people in the band in work. Kopple has won two Academy Awards for documentary, and here she keeps the closeness from turning into spectacle. Jones died of the illness in 2016, and the film leaves her in her last years, still working. Binky Griptite, Starr Duncan-Lowe and Saundra Williams are among the band.
