Miss Violence

On her eleventh birthday a girl steps off a balcony. The family describe it as an accident and life continues in the same order. Rather than explaining what happened, the film shows the order inside the house: who sits where, who may speak and when, where the money comes from. The narrative does not state the truth; it waits for you to see it, and that choice makes it very hard to watch. Alexandros Avranas directed. It took the directing and best actor prizes in Venice. It belongs to the harsh strain of Greek cinema of that period. A real warning: the film is about incestuous abuse and violence against children. Nothing is staged for spectacle, but the content is extremely heavy. Do not come to it unprepared.
