It runs from avant-garde composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Teo Macero to Kraftwerk’s synthesizer drones, Giorgio Moroder’s manufactured Eurodisco, Afrika Bambaataa’s electrofunk and the worldwide sales of Prodigy at the end of the nineties. Lee travels from the American Midwest to Europe to Japan, and what she keeps looking for is the element the music is usually accused of lacking, the human being behind the machine. A soundtrack album came with it, and in 2000 a book, Modulations: A History of Electronic Music, written by Peter Shapiro.
