Salvatore Baccaro What Mondo candido Is About
Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi’s 1975 film is a free adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide, published in 1759. Candide is thrown out of the castle and goes looking for the love he has lost through a world with no fixed period, in which war, slavery, disease and cruelty follow one another while he keeps trying to stay optimistic. The target is Voltaire’s target: the comfortable reasoning that files every catastrophe under some greater good. The two directors were known as the founders of the mondo documentary, and this is a straight narrative film out of that lineage, and the last thing they made together.
