What Monga Is About
The 1980s, in the old Taipei district known as Monga. Five young men tired of being pushed around join a gang and start rising in the neighbourhood. As their power grows the other gangs are unsettled, but what breaks them comes from among themselves rather than outside. The film is less a gangster story than a story of friendship between men and the betrayal of it, and it does not romanticise the violence. It drew large audiences in Taiwan, and Ethan Juan was named best actor at the Golden Horse awards for it.
