What Monpura Is About
A poor but honest young man in rural Bangladesh works for a rich and influential man. When something happens in the employer's household, lies and calculations take over, and the blame falls on the young man, who has done nothing. There is nothing he can do about it, and his life is pushed into uncertainty overnight. Giasuddin Selim's film is as much a story about class as a love story. What sits at its centre is that in an arrangement where money and influence decide what is true, telling the truth is of no use at all. The riverside landscapes and the music are a strength of their own; the songs became popular in Bangladesh independently of the film. It stayed in cinemas there for a long run and became one of the most talked-about Bengali films of the 2000s.
