What Mount Hakkoda Is About

In the winter of 1902, two regiments of a Japanese army preparing for the war expected with Russia set out on an exercise to cross the Hakkoda mountains in the snow. The two units go by different routes and with different preparation: one small and with guides, the other a column of more than two hundred with a slow chain of command. When the blizzard comes they lose their direction, and of the two hundred and ten men in the larger unit only eleven come back alive. The film tells the disaster not as an epic of heroism but as the outcome of the decisions taken. Shiro Moritani’s hundred and sixty nine minute Japanese film was adapted from Nitta Jiro’s novel; Ken Takakura appears.
