Moxie

Sixteen-year-old Vivian watches the sexism at her high school and says nothing. When she finds her mother's feminist zines from her own youth she decides to put out an anonymous magazine, called Moxie. It catches on at school. When a student comes forward about being raped it grows, there is a school-wide walkout, and Vivian is revealed as the person behind it. Amy Poehler directed and plays Vivian's mother. The source is Jennifer Mathieu's 2017 novel. Hadley Robinson plays Vivian and Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Mitchell, with Lauren Tsai, Nico Hiraga, Clark Gregg and Marcia Gay Harden in the cast. It went up on Netflix on 3 March 2021 and runs 111 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 70 percent, the consensus saying it comes up a little short on its themes while remaining easy to like. Metacritic sits at 54. The criticism gathered around one point: the story runs through a white protagonist's view while the characters paying the higher price stay in supporting roles. Who it is for: viewers who like stories of solidarity at school and the teen-film template. Who it is not for: anyone wanting the subject worked through. The film lists the problems and leaves most of them at the surface.
