What Mr. Donkey Is About
In the 1940s a school in a remote village registers the donkey that carries its water as a teacher named Lu Deshui and draws his salary. When the body funding the school announces an inspection they have to produce the teacher, and pass off the village blacksmith in his place. As the lie grows the comedy gives way to something else, and the film turns into a hard account of what compromise and currying favour do to people. Adapted from a stage play. Contains heavy material, including sexual coercion of the woman teacher.
