What Mr. No Problem Is About
There is a farm outside wartime Chongqing. Its owners are in the city and the place is run by the head clerk, a man who argues with nobody, agrees with everybody, and assures anyone who asks that every problem can be settled easily. The farm accordingly makes no money. When somebody more capable is brought in, the real question surfaces: not who does the job better but who is better liked. Mei Feng's first film as a director comes from a 1943 novella by Lao She, shot in black and white in three acts. Fan Wei won best actor at the fifty third Golden Horse Awards, and Mei Feng and Huang Shi took best adapted screenplay.
