Varunni is a hunter, and villagers call him in to catch a leopard that has taken to killing people. During the hunt there is an accident and Varunni kills a man. He then decides to provide for the family the dead man left behind. The film does not offer that decision as penance; it shows it as an arrangement the man makes with his own conscience. How the family receives it produces the real tension of the account. The hunt in the forest and life in the village keep cutting across each other. The hunter’s relation with drink stands inside the story as well. Mammootty takes the lead, with Thilakan and Urvashi also in the cast. I V Sasi’s hundred and forty two minute Indian film was completed in 1989.
