Prey

Dan Trachtenberg frames the hunter not as a monster but as a problem to be learned. Naru’s method is shown in pieces across a hundred minutes: an axe with a rope tied to its handle keeps entering the frame early and pays off at the end. The reward goes to whoever watches the setup patiently; anyone wanting the first confrontation early will find it slow. The clearest distinction is linguistic. The production was released with a version voiced entirely in Comanche, the cast rerecording their roles, both options offered on the same platform. Producer Jhane Myers, of the Comanche and Blackfeet nations, brought binders of reference to the set, went into detail down to the shape of a toothbrush, and insisted horses be written in because, as she put it, this is a horse culture. Shooting took place on Stoney Nakoda land forty five minutes from Calgary, around Moose Mountain and the Elbow River. The flintlock pistol is not decoration: its engraving makes it the same object handed over at the close of the second film in the series. Amber Midthunder trained four weeks beforehand. Worth it if you want to watch a hunter invent her own method. Skip it if you expect a long sustained chase and would count Naru’s trial and error as delay.
