Mudbound

The Mississippi Delta after the Second World War. Two families share the same land: the white McAllans own the farm and the Black Jacksons sharecrop it. Two soldiers come home, Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson. They grow close over what they both went through, and the rules of the place will not allow the friendship. When Ronsel receives a photograph of his mixed-race child from the woman he loved in Germany, it brings the Ku Klux Klan. Dee Rees directed. Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, Jason Mitchell and Garrett Hedlund are in the cast. It went up on Netflix in November 2017. Its place in film history is in two nominations: the cinematographer Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography, and Dee Rees became the first Black woman nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. It took four Oscar nominations in total: Best Supporting Actress for Blige, Best Original Song, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. It had two Golden Globe nominations. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 97 percent. The A.V. Club placed it among the 100 best films of the 2010s. Who it is for: viewers who like American period drama built on race and class. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot take the violence in the last half hour. The film does not shorten the lynching and shows it directly.
