What Murer: Anatomy of a Trial Is About
In 1963 a trial is heard in Graz. The accused, Franz Murer, is an Austrian SS officer who set up and ran the Vilnius ghetto during the war; after it he went home and became a respected farmer and local politician. Survivors of the ghetto come to the hearings and describe what they saw. Everyone listening to them in that room wants the story closed. Christian Frosch's film rests on the actual records of the trial. Murer was acquitted and died a free man in 1994; the trial had only come about through Simon Wiesenthal's years of pursuit. The film stays inside the courtroom and shows how the defence treated the witnesses. It was the most awarded Austrian production of 2018.
