Valerio Mastandrea B Bassirou Ballde What My Class Is About
An experienced teacher gives Italian lessons to a class of migrants trying to learn the language for the sake of a residence permit and a chance at work. Daniele Gaglianone does not shoot this as straight fiction: the teacher is played by the well-known actor Valerio Mastandrea, the students play themselves, and the crew is often visible inside the frame. At a certain point real life overtakes the script and the film cannot go on as planned. That is exactly where its real subject opens up, because one student’s permit becomes more decisive than anything the film had arranged. The lessons carry both very heavy personal accounts and the class’s own humour. It played in the Giornate degli Autori at Venice in 2013.
