What My Geisha Is About
The director Paul Robaix breaks his own habit and leaves his wife, the comic actress Lucy Dell, out of his new production, an adaptation of Madame Butterfly. Lucy is not deterred. She flies to Tokyo, passes herself off as a Japanese geisha, and wins the part from a husband who suspects nothing. Under the makeup the trouble multiplies: a leading man with wandering hands, and a husband slowly realising his brilliant new discovery looks familiar. Jack Cardiff, who came from cinematography, directed in 1962, with Shirley MacLaine and Yves Montand. Seen now, the disguise itself is the most uncomfortable thing in the film.
