A pen pusher sacked for idleness learns that the only way back into working life is to find himself a grandmother, meaning a senior bureaucrat willing to protect him. Kote Mikaberidze's 1929 silent film is a merciless piece of mockery aimed at bureaucracy and patronage. Constructivist sets, animation, puppetry and slapstick all appear in the same picture, and it stands at the centre of the Georgian avant garde. The Soviet authorities found it too satirical and too formalist, shelved it, and it went unshown for forty years until it resurfaced in 1976.
