What My Mother the Mermaid Is About
Na-young works at a post office and is worn out by both of the people at home: a mother who never bends and embarrasses her, and a father who is too kind and gets walked over. The one thing she is waiting for is a trip abroad in a few days. Then her father leaves without a word, her mother will not even look for him, and Na-young gives up the trip to go after him. Arriving in her parents’ home village she meets someone she could not have expected: her mother as a young woman. Jeon Do-yeon plays both parts in Park Heung-sik’s film. The passages showing the young mother diving are shot almost as documentary; Korea’s haenyeo stand in here for the mermaid of the title.
