An engineer committed to his Catholic faith decides he will marry a woman he has seen at church. That same week an old friend takes him to the flat of a divorced woman, and the snow keeps him there. The film is almost entirely talk: an argument lasting all night about faith, probability, choice and fidelity. The narrative says none of them is right and is most interested in how he uses his own principles. Eric Rohmer wrote and directed, with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Francoise Fabian. It belongs to his cycle of moral tales. Who it's for: those who like French cinema built on dialogue. Who it's not for: viewers wanting incident; the film really is what is said in one night.
