Paris, 13th District

Four young people cross paths in the Olympiades tower blocks in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Émilie works in a call centre and starts sleeping with Camille, whom she takes in as a flatmate. Camille later meets Nora, who has come back to study law; wearing a wig one night, Nora is mistaken for a camgirl and hounded out of the university. She finds that woman, Amber Sweet, online. Jacques Audiard directed and wrote it with Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius. The source is unusual: three separate short comics by the American cartoonist Adrian Tomine. Amber Sweet and Killing and Dying come from the book of the latter's name, and Hawaiian Getaway from Summer Blonde. Audiard tied the three together and moved them to Paris. It was shot largely in black and white, which the geometry of the towers and the night lighting carry. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 14 July 2021. Who it is for: viewers who like urban relationship films and pronounced formal choices. Who it is not for: anyone wanting distance. The film shows sex directly and never looks at any of its characters from outside.
