What My Prince Edward Is About
Norris Wong's debut feature is set in the Prince Edward district of Hong Kong. Fong works in a mall full of cheap wedding supplies; she spends her days preparing other people's marriages and cannot get out from under the pressure to have one herself. Unaffordable housing, old customs and a mother-in-law with no sense of a boundary close in on her. On top of that, a sham marriage she entered years ago for money comes back: the man she is supposed to divorce turns up. The film is about a woman's right to choose her own life in Hong Kong, and it offers no easy way out. Wong was named best new director at the 2020 Hong Kong Film Awards.
