Sweden, 1782. Jacob, a young nobleman finishing his studies in France, comes home, and what pleases him most is seeing his sister Charlotte again. But she has been promised to a baron with influence at court, and what Jacob feels looks a great deal like jealousy. Vilgot Sjöman spent his career going at taboos, and the taboo here is the relationship between siblings. He said the idea came from a John Ford play he saw in Paris. The film met censorship in several countries, lost a scene in Italy and was released elsewhere under titles that concealed its subject. Bibi Andersson plays Charlotte and Per Oscarsson Jacob.
