What My SO Has Got Depression Is About
Mikio gives everything to the company that employs him, and then he is diagnosed with depression. His wife Haruko draws comics that do not sell, so the household has long leaned on his salary, and she blames herself for not seeing the change in him sooner. The illness starts with the company pressing him to resign; after he quits he begins to recover, and the balance of the marriage moves with him. Kiyoshi Sasabe spent four years preparing the film, adapted from Tenten Hosokawa’s autobiographical manga about her own husband. Its best inherited instinct is refusing to make a sick man into either a hero or a victim.
