What My Sweet Orange Tree Is About
Zezé is eight, the son of a very poor family on the edge of Rio. His father has been out of work for a long time, the house is never free of tension, and the boy pays for his mischief with beatings. Behind the house they have just moved into he starts talking to an orange tree, and the tree becomes his only friend. Then he meets an older man called Portuga, and for the first time in his life somebody treats him well. Marcos Bernstein adapted the film from José Mauro de Vasconcelos's novel of the same name; the book draws on the author's own childhood and has been read all over the world. João Guilherme Ávila plays Zezé. It is about a child who has to find affection on his own.
