The Kazakh steppe in 1729. The raids of the Dzungar Khanate cannot be stopped, the sultans have scattered, and the villages are on their own. Sartai, a young man who has lost his family, gathers a band of fighters his own age; in Kazakh they are called myn bala, a thousand boys. Akan Satayev's film moves toward the Battle of Anyrakai. It is one of the large budget history films Kazakhstan made after independence and it does not hide that it is a founding story: the battle scenes are wide, the drama is deliberately plain. What makes it interesting is that it stages the events through teenage fighters rather than commanders.
