What Naïs Is About
Toine, a hunchbacked man, works at the tile works and lends a hand in summer to Micoulin the farmer, mainly so as to be near Naïs, the farmer’s daughter. That summer the landowner’s son, Frédéric, comes down from law school for the holidays and sets about pursuing Naïs, whom he has known since they were children. The father lets nobody near her, Naïs wants Frédéric, and Toine stands in the middle wanting nothing. Marcel Pagnol wrote the script from Émile Zola’s story Naïs Micoulin; Raymond Leboursier is the credited director, but the decisions on set were Pagnol’s. Fernandel plays Toine without once asking to be pitied.
