What Naked Among Wolves Is About

April 1945, Buchenwald. A prisoner smuggles a small Jewish child into the camp in a suitcase. The clandestine resistance committee decides the child must be sent out with another transport, because if he is discovered thousands of lives are at risk, but the two men hiding him refuse to carry out the order. Frank Beyer adapted Bruno Apitz’s novel for this DEFA production, and the story rests on a real case, a child who survived the camp. Apitz spent eight years in Buchenwald himself but knew this story only at second hand; the book is fiction, not a document.
