What Narcissus and Psyche Is About
The film takes the character of Psyche from mythology, places her in nineteenth century Europe and builds a life for her. She does not age as the years pass; through losses, removals and abandonments one after another she stays the same. She does not hide her desire and for that reason unsettles the measured people around her; that unsettling is the real matter. The account follows no straight plot; it brings other forms, poetry, diary and painting, inside the film. Its great length comes from that scattered structure. It was adapted from a novel. Patricia Adriani and Udo Kier appear in Gabor Body’s two hundred and sixty one minute Hungarian film, completed in 1980.
