What National Theatre Live: Present Laughter Is About

Noël Coward's play takes place in the house of Garry Essendine, a celebrated actor about to leave on an overseas tour, and everyone who comes through the door wants something from him: admirers, former lovers, producers, his wife and his assistant. He performs constantly and no longer knows when he has stopped. Matthew Warchus's Old Vic production brings the text forward and, by changing the gender of some characters, exposes the tension in Coward's own life. Andrew Scott plays Essendine and never leaves the comedy stranded; the laugh and the panic occupy the same sentence. The capture was released to cinemas through National Theatre Live. Who it is for: viewers who like filmed theatre and Coward comedy. Who it is not for: anyone looking for cinema, since this is a stage record running close to three hours.
