What Naufragio Is About
A woman lives waiting for her son, who is a sailor. She has not seen him for years, but he writes to her often. She shares the letters and her longing with a friend from work. In time the friend begins to build up this young man she has never met in her own mind and to idealise him. The film gives the waiting not as a picture of sorrow but as a story the two women build together. The account is long in saying what the son is actually like. The letter works in the film as both a bond and a screen. The friendship of the two women is the real centre of the story. Maria Rojo and Ana Ofelia Murguia appear in Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s hundred and one minute Mexican film, completed in 1978.
