Nevia

Nevia is seventeen and lives in the container camp at Ponticelli on the edge of Naples. At home there are her grandmother, her aunt and her small sister; life is narrow and there are no options. Nevia wants out of the place. When she finds work at a circus, a door opens onto the first decision that is hers to make. This is Nunzia De Stefano's first film and draws heavily on her own childhood. The container camp at Ponticelli is real and remained a place people lived in for years. The film screened in the Orizzonti section at Venice and was produced by Matteo Garrone. The telling does not turn poverty into scenery; it shows Nevia not as a victim but as someone who makes a choice.
