New Waterford Girl

Mid-1970s, a coal town in Nova Scotia. Fifteen-year-old Mooney Pottie lives inside a crowded family in a place where everyone knows everyone, keeps to herself and dreams about New York. There is nothing in common between the life the town has picked out for her and the one in her head. Things change when a girl from New York moves in next door. The new neighbour shows Mooney something nobody here teaches: there are ways of getting what you want, and some of them are not polite at all. The screenplay was written by Tricia Fish, who left New Waterford at seventeen, which is why the film looks at the town with affection and impatience at once. Allan Moyle keeps the comedy in a painful place and does not make the way out easy.
