Elliott lives on her family's cranberry farm in Ontario and goes camping with friends three weeks before leaving for university. After some mushroom tea, her thirty-nine-year-old self turns up with one instruction: stay away from someone called Chad. Megan Park wrote and directed. Maisy Stella plays Elliott in her first film, with Aubrey Plaza as the same person grown up. The film's best decision is refusing to turn that warning into suspense. The older Elliott eventually withdraws it and tells her younger self to go through the heartbreak knowingly. Shooting began in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario in August 2022. It premiered at Sundance in 2024, Amazon MGM Studios bought it for over 15 million dollars, and it reached cinemas that September. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 90 percent, with a consensus that it does not throw out the wisdom with the reckless abandon of youth. Maisy Stella won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer and the film took a GLAAD Media Award. Who it is for: viewers who like coming-of-age films and time travel used as an emotional device. Who it is not for: anyone wanting internal consistency. The time logic is never explained and the film does not care.
