Domee Shi pitched three ideas to Pixar on 31 October 2017; the pick was a girl going through a magical puberty. Her appointment, announced in May 2018, made her the first woman to direct a feature at the studio on her own, and the creative leads were Pixar’s first all female team, which Jim Morris said came about organically, not by design. Shi built the visual language on anime and names her sources: Ranma ½, Fruits Basket and Sailor Moon. Hand drawn two dimensional effects sit over the three dimensional animation. Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell wrote three songs for the fictional boy band, and Finneas voices one of its five members. The score was Ludwig Göransson’s first for animation. A cinema release was set for 11 March 2022. On 7 January 2022 Disney moved it straight to Disney+, citing Omicron, the third Pixar feature in a row to skip theatres after Soul and Luca. It reached screens only on 9 February 2024, with the short Kitbull. At the 95th Academy Awards it was nominated for Animated Feature Film; Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won. A good fit if you take the concert ticket economy of Toronto in 2002 as the plot’s engine. Not for anyone waiting for the fight with the mother to close with the daughter found wrong.
