In S. J. Suryah’s 2004 Tamil film, an eight-year-old who has run away from home meets a scientist, and an experiment turns him into a twenty-eight-year-old man while his mind stays eight. What follows is a comedy built around somebody moving through an adult body with a child’s understanding of it. The film uses the premise as science fiction but is actually interested in how much of adulthood is performance. Suryah directs and takes the lead, with Simran and Kiran Rathod opposite him. At a hundred and sixty-seven minutes it carries the long-form habit of Tamil cinema of the period.
