Next Sohee

Sohee, in her final year of school, is placed by the school into an internship at a subcontracted call centre. The work is preventing customers from cancelling subscriptions; there are targets, the bonuses are not paid, the pressure is constant and nobody will acknowledge the situation. After her death the case goes to detective Oh Yu-jin, and the second half becomes an investigation. July Jung splits the film deliberately: first what the girl saw, then what the institutions say. Bae Doona plays the detective and carries her anger without ever raising it. It was drawn from a real case and provoked argument in South Korea about the internship system. It closed Critics' Week at Cannes. Who it is for: viewers who like Korean social drama and films about exploitation at work.
