What Next to Her Is About
In Haifa, Chelli looks after her sister Gabi, who has a developmental intellectual disability, entirely on her own. When a social worker finds out that Gabi is left alone in the flat while Chelli is at work, Gabi is placed in a day centre, and Chelli’s day empties out all at once. Zohar moves into that emptiness, but because Chelli cannot be close to anyone the way she is close to her sister, the three of them tie into something knotted and hard to name. Liron Ben-Shlush wrote it out of her own life and plays the lead; the director, Asaf Korman, is her husband. It screened in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2014.
