What 'night, Mother Is About
Tom Moore's 1986 American film, from Marsha Norman's screenplay adapted from her own Pulitzer-winning play, gives a two-hander taking place over one night. Jessie tells her mother she will kill herself that evening; the mother tries to prevent it by talking, and the film never leaves that house. The text's force is presenting suicide not as a moment of crisis but as the end of a long reckoning: Jessie is calm, decided, and explains her reasons. The mother tries every route of negotiation. The balance between Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft carries the entire film. Cinematically it is too closed and theatrical; the adaptation does not open the text out. Who it's for: viewers who like performance-centred drama and adaptations from the stage. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding the subject of suicide, or wanting cinematic expansion.
