What Night Zoo Is About
Marcel is just out of prison and trying to put his life back together. His girlfriend Julie is living another life now; his father Albert believes his son has been away on a long trip abroad. At the same time two corrupt policemen are after him for drug money he is said to have, and one of them has an old grudge against him. The film holds a hard crime story and a father-and-son story in the same body without watering down either. It was Jean-Claude Lauzon’s first feature and it opened Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 1987. In Canada it won thirteen Genie awards from fourteen nominations.
