Nightfall

The film is set in a harbour town. The town is run down and dark. The streets are cobbled. In the bars there are regulars speaking German. Portuguese workers are in the same places. Fado music runs through the film. The account does not rest on a clear plot. At the centre are a young couple. They are called Leni and Anton. One evening the two of them quarrel. Then they go their separate ways. All night they wander apart from each other. Everyone is looking for some closeness and nobody finds it. Adolfo Assor and Thomas Baumann take the leads in Fred Kelemen’s German and Portuguese coproduction of 1999.
