Nine Letters to Berta

Lorenzo comes back to Salamanca from England. He met Berta there. She is the daughter of Spanish exiles. She has never seen Spain. Lorenzo writes her nine letters. The film is divided into nine parts, one for each of them. He tries to describe the country her parents left behind. He struggles to find anything worth describing. Life in the provincial town wears him down. His family, his friends and his fiancée repeat the same round, while church and custom set the shape of the days. London stays far off as an idea of freedom, and the film draws a portrait of Spain under Franco. Emilio Gutiérrez Caba and Elsa Baeza appear in the ninety minute film, taken at the time as a sign of a new generation, a Spanish production Basilio Martín Patino finished in 1966.
