Songs for After a War

The documentary is about the years in Spain after the civil war. Those years passed in hunger, repression and censorship. The film builds all this through popular culture. What it works with is songs, newspapers, magazines, films and newsreels. Every one of those images had passed the Francoist censors at the time. But set beside the songs, the same images take on another meaning. The work was shot in secret in 1971 and then banned. It could only be released in 1976, shortly after Franco’s death. The hundred and one minutes are spread over a long period. Basilio Martín Patino’s Spanish documentary reached audiences in that year.
